Delta: What's Really Causing Flight Delays?
Business question: What drives Delta's departure delays, and where should operations teams focus to reduce them?
Dashboard design (use the caption boxes at the top to navigate):
-
View 1: When & where delays happen (season, time of day, airport)
-
View 2: Whether flight distance or specific aircraft play a role
-
View 3: Which airports are the most & least predictable
Key Findings
-
Summer is the problem season. July delays average 10.4 minutes, about 70% above the yearly average, while fall is the calmest.
-
Delays snowball through the day: 9 of the 10 most-delayed departure times are in the evening or overnight.
-
Flight distance makes almost no difference. Short and long routes see similar delays.
-
Atlanta, Delta's main hub, is among the most reliable airports, while New York's JFK and LaGuardia are among the least predictable.
Why Does It Matter?
Separating what actually drives a problem from what doesn't is important for a business, so time and money go where they'll actually make a difference. In practice, for Delta that means more schedule buffer in summer and in the evenings, and attention on specific airports rather than specific routes.
